A vital status symbol? Every high-end home needs one..

This custom-made cellar was designed by Rousseau Design for a private client in Kensington who wanted an imaginative setting for his much-treasured collection of wine. Instead of being dark and gloomy, the cavernous cellar below the kitchen is gloriously lit up with bright pink lights behind opal acrylic panels, allowing the user to proudly show visitors around his collection and easily select a bottle of wine. To create this sensational effect, white LEDs sit behind a pink gel that features a heat-activated infra-red sensor. ‘It is quite a challenging installation as the ceiling height is so low,’ says creative director Ben Rousseau. ‘Bespoke acrylic screens are fitted over transparent frames which had to be fitted snug to each arch despite the poor manoeuvrability. But what a great result!’ Rousseau Design accepts commissions for cellars and all kinds of other special projects. Cost: approx £10K for 3 similar installation including 3 illuminated panels.
